Social media company wants to convince parents to let their children create an account
Instagram creators argue children under 13 get bullied if they’re not on instagram. That’s why they’re trying to encourage parents to create accounts for their children. In their document „Tips for Parents“ Instagram tries to convince sceptical parents. The company is now heavily criticized for that.
“There’s a risk of social marginalization for kids who are not allowed to socialize in this way that’s now so embedded in their social lives”, says the text by Instagram.
Instagram says: “Whether Instagram is “safe” depends more on how it’s used than on the age of the user”, which drew a lot of criticism.
At the sime time, the company outlines risks the children could encounter, like mobbing or sharing of inappropiate content. They claim children can learn how to deal with these risks. Parents should make sure their children are prepared for that.
“How positive or negative a young person’s experience is on Instagram or anywhere online depends as much on the person and his or her friends as on the app. […] For many kids, part of the fun of Instagram is developing a big following”
“Even if a parent bans all social media, his or her child’s photo and other information can be posted by friends via their accounts. […] Wise use tends to be better than no use.”
